ThePCA9548Adevicehaseightbidirectionaltranslatingswitchesthatcan be controlledthroughthe I2C bus.The SCL/SDAupstreampair fansout toeightdownstreampairs,or channels.Any individualSCx/SDxchannelor combinationof channelscan beselected,determinedby thecontentsof theprogrammablecontrolregister.Thesedownstreamchannelscan be usedto resolveI2C slaveaddressconflicts.Forexample,if eightidenticaldigitaltemperaturesensorsare neededin the application,one sensorcan be connectedat eachchannel:0-7.The systemmastercan resetthe PCA9548Ain theeventof a time-outor otherimproperoperationbyassertinga low in the RESETinput.Similarly,thepower-onresetdeselectsall channelsand initializesthe I2C/SMBusstatemachine.AssertingRESETcausesthe sameresetandinitializationto occurwithoutpoweringdownthe part.Thisallowsrecoveryshouldonceof the downstreamI2C busesget stuckin a low state.The passgatesof the switchesare constructedsothat the VCCpin can be usedto limitthe maximumhigh voltage,whichis passedby the PCA9548A.Thisallowsthe use of differentbus voltageson eachpair,so that 1.8-V,2.5-Vor 3.3-Vpartscan communicatewith5-Vparts,withoutanyadditionalprotection.Externalpull-upresistorspullthe busup to thedesiredvoltagelevelfor eachchannel.All I/O pinsare 5-V tolerant
